Gap Year
The FTIFA Cape Town Gap Year Programme in partnership with Physical IQ provides players with an opportunity to study and work on their football at the same time in beautiful Cape Town.
The FTIFA Gap Year programme is an 11 month course enabling players to pursue their tertiary education, while also providing the perfect opportunity to develop their football ability over a longer period. This also ensures players are given ample opportunity to impress coaches from teams within the Fleetwood Football Group and progress their football careers.
What's Included
Players will have access to the full FTIFA residential training experience plus one of the following accredited qualifications from Physical IQ:
- National Certificate in Fitness
- National Certificate in Coaching Science
- National Certificate in Sports Management

Set in the perfect location to allow our players to chase their dreams in idyllic surrounds with space and time to thrive while retaining their valuable connection to home, the support of their family, and their community. The Dream Factory is the new shared home of FTIFA Cape Town and HBUFC, and features the following facilities:
- Five-A-Side court.
- Football specific gym.
- Player canteen.
- Team bonding and games rooms.
- Dormitories.
- Changing rooms.
- Classrooms.
- Video and Analysis Room.
- Dream Factory Cafe.
- Physiotherapist.
- HBUFC and FTIFA coaches offices.
OUR COACHES
MICHAEL DARBY
Academy Director of FTIFA Cape Town, and HBUFC Performance Manager, with years of experience in the education and sports industry. Mike has been a part of the development of numerous South African athletes who have played for their country in many different sports.
BORJA HERRANZ
FTIFA Cape Town Lead International Coach and HBUFC Head Coach, Borja has a UEFA A License and experience coaching at Spanish Segunda Division side, Real Oviedo.
BYRON MCKELLAR
FTIFA Cape Town Academy Coach and Head of Student Success, Byron has played and captained HBUFC, and has a teaching degree from the University of Cape Town.
